Sustainable Food Systems

Sustainable Food Systems (SFS) deploy new approaches to optimizing efficiency flows in food production, packaging, transportation, distribution, and disposal. Improved efficiency flows will help enterprises and farmers increase earnings and competitiveness, expand offerings, and gain access to new markets.

SFS program links private and public organizations and farmers in the agricultural sector.

The SFS program will use fast growing fresh food demand, public procurement, and disposal in innovative ways to support the deployment of sustainable food systems to engage farmers, who rely on agriculture for their livelihood. Our contribution to efficiency flows is an important step towards sustainable food systems. This initiative is based on three critical components:

Collaborative Learning - knowledge sharing and workforce training

Connecting Farmers

The farming community is vast; we work with organizations representing business, farmers, farms, warehouse operators, traders, government agencies, and NGOs.

Optimizing Efficiency Flows and Deploying Eco Innovation In New Ways

Government agencies and NGOs buy technologies through large competitive tenders. Through our pilot and market replication projects, individuals and organizations can join specific partner projects to introduce solutions and deploy new approaches best suited to smallholder farmers. These partner projects and new forms of competitive purchases and direct contracting are available through NFH and emerging local food hubs. These regional hubs will serve as platforms for government agencies, NGOs, and farmers providing them easy access to eco innovations and expertise. We also pioneer forward contracting that commits government agencies and NGOs to buy new technology and services from NFH stakeholders in the future at an agreed price.

Partnerships

Having enterprises, government agencies and NGOs as committed partners serves as an incentive for innovators to increase their support to farmers. A critical factor to the success of these projects however, is the wide range of organizations to support innovators and farmers throughout the entire value chain to:

Collaborative Learning and Sharing

NFH has established many ways to capture and share valuable information through local food hubs to monitor and evaluate success. Surveys and case studies will provide a detailed understanding of how improved efficiency flows will affect all partners. Collaboration will help connect NGO’s, partners, and innovators through local hubs with national and global reach. We are identifying mechanisms to develop and deploy new innovations. The best approaches identified will be mainstreamed into NFH practices. The lessons drawn will be shared with individuals and organizations across NFH and local food hubs to serve as a model.
